Bukhara Cultural Center

A multi-purpose cultural hub featuring exhibition halls, a 400-seat auditorium, and artisan workshops. The design echoes the geometry of historic Bukhara madrasas — a symmetrical plan organized around an open-air courtyard — but reinterprets it with contemporary materials: self-compacting concrete, weathering steel, and laminated timber trusses.

The building serves as the anchor for Bukhara's emerging creative economy. The ground floor houses a permanent collection gallery tracing the city's 2,500-year architectural evolution, while upper-level flexible galleries host rotating exhibitions of contemporary Central Asian art. A 120-seat black-box theater accommodates drama, dance, and film screenings, and the workshop wing provides subsidized studio space for ceramicists, miniature painters, and textile artists continuing Bukhara's storied craft traditions.

Acoustics were a primary design driver. The auditorium features a variable acoustic system with motorized fabric banners and adjustable ceiling reflectors, allowing the room to shift from a reverberant concert hall (RT60 of 1.8 seconds) to a speech-friendly lecture format (RT60 of 0.9 seconds) within minutes. The workshop wing is acoustically isolated from the performance spaces using a double-wall construction with a 100 mm air gap.

The courtyard functions as the social heart of the building — a sheltered microclimate where pomegranate and apricot trees provide shade and fragrance. A shallow water channel runs the courtyard's length, its gentle sound masking urban noise from the adjacent boulevard. In summer, the courtyard hosts outdoor cinema screenings and bazaar-style craft markets.

Energy performance targets a 50% reduction over the national building code baseline, achieved through a high-performance envelope (U-value 0.22 W/m²K), ground-source heat pumps, and a 200 kWp rooftop photovoltaic array that feeds surplus generation back to the municipal grid.
